CAM/CNC Tandem Machine with Two Units at Long-Term Customer ARU Grupp AS

Technician Salvatore Gandolfo has completed the installation of a tandem machine with two aggregates on one Y-axis at our customer ARU Grupp.

The Estonian company ARU Grupp installed its tenth machine with Compass Software in September. The state-of-the-art staircase manufacturer is committed to automation and optimisation. Salvatore Gandolfo was on site for eight days to install the latest addition to their machine park, an SCM Accord 42FX. The CNC machine is equipped with two 5-axis spindles, a drill, two lasers and a 9-meter-long table with 12 automatic beams and 4 automatic vacuum cups each. The CNC programs are generated by a barcode control system. After production, all parts are tagged with an RFID label for identification.

The tandem machine can be used efficiently in two ways:

The machine processes two identical parts simultaneously in tandem operation. The 2 machine units work on both parts simultaneously. This allows the staircase manufacturer to produce twice as fast. ARU mainly processes large stringers and handrail parts in this way.
The machine can produce individual parts faster by optimising tool changes. While one machine unit is working on the component, e.g., sawing it, the second unit can already load the next tool, e.g., a drill. As soon as the first machining operation is completed, the second machine unit can immediately start the next machining operation with the next tool. In this way, changeover is instantaneous, and the processing can be performed without any significant pauses. The time savings are enormous.
